What are Essential Oils? An essential oils are derived from the concentrated aroma centers of plants. Fragrant plant oils are distilled producing a hydrophobic liquid containing volatile scent compounds for use in commercial applications. These oils have also been called volatile or ethereal oils, or are simply named after the plant which they were extracted from , such as oil of cinnamon leaf. What makes an "essential" is that it carries a strong scent essence, of the plant it is derived from. Essential oils as a group do not have any specific chemical properties in common, beyond their specific fragrances.
